The Mage's Apprentice; [Meadow]

Anduriel grinned, placing a rather massive stone inside the circle, leaving enough room for Meadow to stand comfortably. Sure, it looked daunting, but he was confident that she would be able to do it.

"Okay, I want you to lift that stone. I doubt you can now, but empower the circle. Without any ambient magic floating about, you can probably do it. Give it a shot." He sat back, rather entertained by having an apprentice to teach. It made his life much more interesting, and he could almost forget about everything going on in Canterlot with the war. Just him, Meadow, and the magic of Equestria, flowing around them. It was all very peaceful, and he figured that if he ever retired from the guard, he'd start doing this full-time.

Meadow doubted she could do it at all, honestly. Perhaps she should have begged off from further practice for the day. She was certain her focus would be absolutely shot. She couldn't possibly scrounge enough of it up to do anything.

Still, just to test its weight, she let the pink aura envelope the massive stone. She didn't even have to try to move it. It was like poking a mountain and knowing even your strongest buck would make no difference.

So, she focused on the circle again, letting her magic dissipate from the rock. But, even after several long minutes of flickering, she could not get the light circle to complete. Just as one thin patch filled, another would tear apart.

She suspected dully that she might be doing this on purpose, even if she didn't realize it. Making sure that the strange ritual that had allowed her to break the most basic rules of life could not be repeated. A psychological safety latching that trigger, as it were.

Eventually, she let the magic flicker out entirely.

"I... may need some more time, before I... try again, with the circles." She managed, slowly. It was an admittance of weakness, and of failure, but continuing to press at it would serve only to upset her again. Of that, she was certain.

Anduriel nodded, his expression unchanging. Given what they had just been through, it was natural she wouldn't be able to do anything. Magic was based as much off of the user's mind as the primal energy they controlled, and with Meadow's mind in as much pain as it likely was he found it highly unlikely she'd have the focus to do anything at this point in her training.

"Very well. I have some food, if you'd like. If not, I believe it would be okay to take an early evening. It's been a long day for you, young Meadow." Some part of him recognized his lack of the term hatchling, and he chalked it up to basic respect. After all, very few beings, dragon or not could do what she had done. Even fewer would realize the ethics of it, and for that he deeply respected her.

Meadow nodded slowly in response, only realizing perhaps a shade too late that there had been two suggestions in that statement.

"I couldn't eat again." She said with quiet surety. Gems and fish would upset her with their novelty, and plants would make her only more aware of what she had done. It was fortunate enough that she wasn't hungry in the first place. Perhaps she should have been, but it was only one little sprout, and it had served to prove to her that most magicians didn't realize how wrong their actions were, simply because they could not. It had been an easy feat.

"But sleep, I think, vould be most velcome." She attempted a laugh, though it sounded forced. "I feel much like I did vhen I learned Equvestrian. There are bits, pieces that seem familiar, and understandable. But so many more that are new, and hard to grasp. My mind aches with it."

Anduriel sat down on the sun-warmed stone he'd been sleeping on, leaving Meadow to her own devices.

"In that case, I suppose we can put off work for the rest of the day. Sleep, or do as you wish. If you want to return home for a few hours, that is also a possibility, although it isn't going to be long before you return anyway. Do as you wish, I won't bother you until the morning." He closed his eyes himself, drifting quickly off to sleep.
